Wellington Cheap & Free Activities that are Worth It!
13/10/20
Recently my husband and I spent a month in Wellington and we didn’t want to go absolutely broke (to be honest we just mainly love spending all of our money on food), so as we always do when we travel we looked for the epic cheap and free stuff to do. Here are the things that I ACTUALLY think are worth the time!
Te Papa
An obvious classic, but honestly after travelling the whole country and going to a bunch of museums, this one is the top of the lot! The whole building is beautiful and entertaining, but the ANZAC Gallipoli exhibition is the must see thing. The best thing, it’ll fill an afternoon for no money at all! Drop a small donation in the donation box if you can though.

Coffee
You can’t go to Wellington without checking out some of their epic cafes and coffee bars. For just the price of a cup of coffee you can get a cup of coffee at some super cool spots. Hang around, do some work or catch up with a mate. My favourite places are twist and pour, customs and prefab.

Cuba Street Thrifting
Cuba is the home to some of the best second hand clothing stores in the country. Although you’d find yourself paying more here for clothes than you would in a regular red cross store, its super fun to just have a big ole browse, try some stuff on, and if you look for long enough you’ll find a great deal on one of the sale racks! If you’re genuinely looking to buy some cheap thrifted things, head over to Petone (about a 20ish minute drive), their main street is stacked with epic op shops.

Harbourside Market
Held every Sunday, wander around and watch the buskers and enjoy the good vibes, or spend a few bucks at one of the many food stalls. There’s a bunch of fruit and veg vendors as well if you want to stock up on some fresh produce.

Oriental Parade
One of the nicest spots to stroll down, take a cuppa up to the viewing deck and watch the fountain, have a swim or a sunbathe in summer or check out one of the many coffee shops around there. Beach Babylon on Oriental parade have two for one mains and fondue during the week too!

Cheap Eats
If you’re on a budget but you’re in the city there are loads of cheap spots to check out. A few favourites are The Oaks Noodle House and Lucky’s Chicken. Yum.

Walks
There are a bunch around Wellington but the easiest and most common one is Mt Vic! Takes only 20 minutes to get up to the top and the view is panoramic. Drive to the coast and past the airport for a heap of cute, picturesque coastal walks.
